Field Day Mission: Big body movement!

Happy February families,

We are still riding strong through 2018! The growth, persistence and skills that are being developed by our Redwoods, inspire me. We have a palatable rhythm and we continue to build on trusting our voices. Even when “pushed,” students rise to the challenge and lean in to the learning. I can’t tell you how many times I hear, “YES!” when we’re transitioning to our next activity. They seem to be excited about what we’re learning in class: from publishing their Folktales to exploring California’s native tribes (for our project-based social studies unit). I am so proud of our Redwoods and how far they have grown, both literally and figuratively!

Although we are always assessing what works/does not work for us – there is a new factor to navigate: Home Practice! Not only did our Redwoods cheer with excitement when we introduced it, some even asked if they could do MORE! For math Home Practice, I am reminding them of only doing part of the worksheet, so they can spend time as they choose. However, I am always met with, “but we can do the whole thing, right?”.  Their enthusiasm for learning and proving their growth, is so amazing and warming to my heart. Seeing their pure joy for learning underscores our commitment to this way of learning.

We look forward to the curiosity, collaboration, and exploration that February will bring!

Enthusiastically yours,
Nicolette Rodriguez-Moody

Keeping Kids From Toy Guns: How One Mother Changed Her Mind

*   *   *
BY CHRISTINE GROSS-LOH/The Atlantic

When my husband was growing up, the only boy in a family of all girls, his mother didn’t allow him to have any toy guns. He was a mild mannered, sweet little boy. But when he was five years old, he ran over to his friend’s house and “borrowed” one of the toy guns he had played with over there and coveted, stashing it in his bedroom.

For years, every time I heard what has become a famous family story I sided with my mother-in-law. When my sons were babies I knew how our society viewed male aggression. Like other parents I knew, I had a keen desire to protect my boys, a certainty I could steer their play in the right direction, and a categorical abhorrence for violent toys of any kind. Their first toys were blocks, puzzles, and cooperative games. They were empathetic and kind boys. I felt no small triumph that my strategy had worked: my gentle sons didn’t even know…
